The ATH team tried the star hair trend – and it didn’t go quite as planned…

Ditch the Santa hats because Christmas hair just got a whole lot chicer.

We all know that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. And this year, we’re preparing to show our festive spirit with some serious holiday cheer, by rocking sparkling star hair accessories!

A classier, yet no less Christmas-sy, alternative to the tinsel hair trend, star confetti, clips and hair rings are not only seasonal, but also gorgeously Instagram-worthy – or so we thought.

How to wear star hair accessories this Christmas & New Years – as seen on the ATH editors

Beth Strong, Junior Beauty Editor

“As one of my go-to looks for work, I needed a new way to update my half-up, half-down hairstyle. So when I spotted this barrette, I instantly knew this was my way to take on the Instagram-loved star hair trend.

Simply pinning back the top section of my hair meant that I could show off my tousled waves, which, when paired with my new starry ‘do, gave my look a more romantic feel.

I will be wearing this style far beyond the party season, as I think it will look great for any special occasion.”

Where the party at?

Leona English, Junior Beauty Editor

“Okay, as much as I loved the outcome of my starry take on the glitter roots trend, I can’t say my colleagues were best impressed with me leaving a path of gold stars in my wake.

But saying that, I do think this look is amazing for party season and I will certainly be wearing the style again for New Years – remembering to stash a few extra stars in my purse for touch up emergencies.

Perfect for sprucing up any hairstyle, including my new fave style (I call it wash and go), this star roots trend will be amazing paired with space buns.”

Editor’s tip: Now as much as I tried, I couldn’t quite prevent my stars from falling – that was until I spritzed my roots with TRESemmé Superior Hold HairsprayThis ultra-fine formula leaves a soft and touchable feel to my tresses, that brushes out easily and, best of all, leaves no sticky residue!

Some trends are not for everyone.

Amra Markic, Junior Beauty Editor

“I so desperately wanted to get in on the star hair trend and after initially trying to add star hair rings to my Marley twists, I instantly knew it was a no-go for me. FYI hair rings and Marley twists should not mix.

So, determined not to be defeated at the first hurdle (Aaliyah did say: ‘if at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again’), I thought I would do my own take on Leona’s star roots.

Yet if you didn’t realise from my sad-looking pic, that was quite frankly an epic fail, too! But sometimes you have to just fake it until you make it, which is why I cheated the star hair trend with my most-loved Snapchat filter!”

1. Starry roots

Looking for a ‘do that doesn’t require too much styling skill? Well, look no further. We’re happy to report that this summer’s glitter roots festival hair trend is making a comeback for party season, but this time with a starry sequin twist. Needless to say, we’re obsessed! Credit: @insta_western_shop

Editor’s tip: Wondering how to get your stars to stay in place? The key is to first spritz the area with some of the VO5 Extra Hold Hairspray until it becomes tacky, then you can place your sequins on top so they’ll stick. Once the party is over, just be sure to follow our guide to removing glitter from your hair.

2. Star updo

Already responded to your Christmas party invites? Then you’ll be needing a twisted updo for the festivities! But since this is supposed to be a special time of year, you’ll also need to pull out all the stops – and that means placing some glittery stars in your mane.

Opting for a minimalist hair clip with a few cute stars attached is a quick and easy way to upgrade any hairstyle in a jiffy. Whether you want to place it to the side of your parting, to conceal your hairband or just as a way to secure your half-up, half-down ‘do, there’s nowhere this little gem can’t take you! Credit: @accessoriesbyelizabeth

4. Braids

If you can’t go all out with your hair on Christmas, when can you? Braids are always a party pleaser and this incredible Khaleesi-inspired style is nothing short of magical.

Adding intricate hair rings with dangling star charms gives this a dainty, jewellery-like vibe that you’ll want to wear from Christmas right through to NYE! Credit: @bylauriefern

Editor’s tip: To create intricate braided styles like this, we recommend applying some of the TONI&GUY Sea Salt Texturising Spray through your hair before you begin braiding. This will help to add grit and texture to soft, slippery strands, making it easier to plait and giving your style more longevity.

5. Simple slide

Torn between showing your festive spirit while still wanting to look stylish? A simple star hair slide can easily be added into any hairstyle (like these cascading waves) to hold your bangs in place and give you just the right amount of Christmas spirit, without being OTT.
