Ready to take your festival hair game up a notch? Then it’s time you tried glitter roots, the hair trend that’s taken the social media world by storm. Festival-goers and celebs like Miley Cyrus and Dakota Fanning have been seen sporting this sparkly hairstyle and, if they can pull it off, so can you – you just need to know how.
Just keep reading below for our step-by-step guide on how to do glitter roots, plus get all the different coloured glitter styling inspiration (and trust us, there’s loads).
What you’ll need:
- Fine glitter in a colour of your choice (pink or mermaid green are always a good idea). We’ve gone for the VO5 Ocean Blue Hair Glitter. Not only is it ultra sparkly, it’s also biodegradable, so it’s safe for you and the planet.
- A damp brush or fingertips.
- VO5 Fixing Spray for Glitter.
Step 1: Define your parting
Start with clean hair and brush it through to remove any knots. Then, neatly part your hair into either a centre or side parting — whichever you prefer.
Step 2: Sprinkle on the glitter
Take some glitter and carefully sprinkle it all over your parting. This can get messy, so we recommend doing this over a sink or old towel in case of glitter spillages.
After you’ve sprinkled some over your hair, use your fingers or a damp brush to gently pat the glitter onto your parting for a more intense look. Depending on the effect you’re after, you can add as much or as little glitter as you like – scroll down for some styling suggestions.
Step 3: Add chunkier stars or sequins
For added pizzazz, sprinkle some chunkier specs of glitter on top of your hair. This second layer of glitter can be a complementary or contrasting colour to the glitter underneath, or it can be shaped glitter specs, like stars or hearts.
If you’re after a colour that matches everything and shows up well even on darker hair, opt for an iridescent silver, like the VO5 Silver Stardust Hair Glitter.
Step 4: Apply a fixing spray
Set your hair glitter roots in place by spritzing your mane with some VO5 Fixing Spray For Glitter. This fine spray works to fix glitter to the hair, helping you keep your style in place throughout the day. Spray it in short, even bursts over areas of the hair where glitter has been applied so that it stays put.
Step 5: Final look
And there you have it: sparkly, double-tap worthy strands that’ll shine while you’re rocking out at your favourite festivals.
