5 Tips for Loving Your Natural Hair

It's time to celebrate your hair.

Believe it or not, sometimes loving black hair and natural hair isn’t always the easiest of tasks. And in this age of social media, it seems like everyone has an opinion about everything – particularly when it comes to hair.

But how do you keep cool when faced with hair-haters and curl-critics? Well, here at the All Things Hair HQ, we believe that all hair types are beautiful and deserved to be loved. So, in the spirit of loving our natural tresses, we’ve pulled together a list of our 5 top tips to help you appreciate your hair! Viva la ‘fro!

Why not create a (hair) support system?

1. Create a (Hair) Support System

Whether it be on social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook or just within your circle of friends, create a (hair) support system. Surrounding yourself with like-minded (or should we say hair-minded?) people can help you with loving and accepting your black natural hair. Not to mention, it’s a great way to exchange ideas, tips and share hair experiences!

2. Create a Pinterest Hair-inspiration Board

Have you seen an image of awesome natural black hair? Then pin it – to your Pinterest board, that is! Collating beautiful visuals isn’t only a great way of celebrating natural hair, it’s also a brilliant way of putting your hair-inspiration all in one place. Festival hairstyles for black natural hair? There’s a board for that!

3. Say Nice Things About Your Black Natural Hair

It’s time to change the way you talk about your hair and to start speaking about your ‘fro in a positive light. That means trying to cut back on any negative, or underhandedly-put comments about your hair. We don’t want to hear “my ‘fro is unmanageable!” or “my curls are too tight!”, okay?

Instead, try to talk about the strengths of your hair. It doesn’t have to be a massive change, just set yourself a small goal of saying a nice comment about your hair every day or making a list of things that you like about your mane! Then, whenever you need a little hair pick-me-up, you can look at this list and smile!

4. Accept That This is Your Natural Hair Texture

This top tip is probably one of the hardest to fulfil and is definitely far easier said than done. But whatever your curl type or pattern may be, try and accept your black natural hair. This is the hair texture you have and battling to try to make it something else is a lot of effort. It’s easier to celebrate and embrace the coils!

5. And Finally, Don’t Be So Harsh on Yourself…

Most importantly: be kind to yourself. Even if you’ve set the intention to try and love your black natural hair, it might not go as smoothly as you expected – and that’s okay! Just remember that you’re only human and that it will take a little time for these positive habits to form and take root.
