1. Slicked back hair

Just got out of the sea? Luckily, wet locks were an obsession on the spring/summer 2016 runways, with designers like Kenzo, DSquared2 and Julien Macdonald opting for super slick hairstyles for their models. Whether you wear your hair neatly swept back or styled into a glossy updo, we predict slicked back hair will be a popular new hairstyle to try out this summer. The great thing about this style is that it’s easy to recreate and can also double up as a sophisticated summer evening look.

2. Beachy waves

Ever timeless and the sheer epitome of summer, we know that beachy waves will never go out of style. So what makes them new for SS16? Individuality: there are no rules to this season’s beach styles! As Stella McCartney proved in her SS16 collection, waves come in all shapes and sizes, so simply play to your hair’s strengths. Got tight curls or big, bouncy waves? Great! Have slightly kinky hair? No problem. Even if your hair’s poker straight, you have free reign to create the wave you want. Remember: work with your natural hair, not against it. You’ll be championing a fresh-feeling hairstyle in no time.

This hairstyle’s been on our radar ever since we saw Valentino’s models rocking it on the runway. A bold new take on the classic ponytail, we love its sleek, modern look – and better still, it’s super practical for summer. So, if you’re looking for a quick and easy hairstyle that promises high impact, this ‘do has got you covered. And bonus: all you need for this playful new hairstyle is a few hair bands!

New hairstyle: Boxer braids.

4. Boxer braids

Ever since Chicago-based brand Creatures of the Wind showcased boxer braids at its New York Fashion Week show back in February, A-list stars and models alike have been obsessed with recreating this fun and easy hairdo. We certainly see the appeal to this braided style: it’s the perfect solution for lived-in locks and can also work to tame curly or afro hair. Plus, it keeps hair off your face and neck all day: what’s not to love?

5. Half-up, half-down top knot

Can’t make up your mind about wearing your hair up or down? Well now you don’t have to! The half-up, half-down top knot combines the best of both worlds. We especially love the effortlessly cool combination of sea-swept textured waves with a messy top knot – the perfect mix of pared-down and polished.

6. Flora-tastic

What better way to inject a soaring hit of sunshine than to pepper your hair with pretty petals? For her SS16 show, Diane von Furstenberg sent her models down the runway with a cluster of vibrant tropical flowers, tucked into their untamed curly tresses to stunning tropical effect. Tip: if you’re going recreate this look, make sure your choice of flowers complements the wildness your hair!

7. Unicorn braids

We first spotted the super cool centre plait, AKA the ‘unicorn braid’, on London-based design duo Felder Felder’s autumn/winter 2016 runway and immediately loved it. Great for those who want to experiment with a new type of plait, the unicorn braid is really easy to do. We predict this practical and pretty new hairstyle will be a hot summer look, especially among the festival lovers.

Tip: after creating your unicorn braid, tease the rest of your tresses for some extra glam volume.

8. The twist

Twists are super easy to create, and that’s part of their charm. Cult-favourite New York-based brand Public School sent models down the runway with a twisted rope-like version of a ponytail, while Paul Smith opted for a twisted romantic updo in London. Just take your pick: the results are both cool and feminine.

9. Tucked-in hair

Christopher Kane got the beauty and fashion industry buzzing when he sent models down the runway with dishevelled tresses tucked into plastic chokers. For those that like to do little to their hair, this is a cool update on a simple down ‘do. Think of it as summer’s take on winter’s tucked-in hair trend: this low maintenance hairstyle requires you to delicately leave out a few choice strands, resulting in a cool look that’s effortlessly undone. Take this look from runway to real life by tucking your hair into a thin ribbon or silk scarf tied around your neck.

10. Lived-in hair

This season it’s all about embracing your natural hair. So it should come as no surprise that lived-in, undone hairstyles emulating that ‘just got out of bed look’ were a key feature on many SS16 runways, including hit US designer Marc Jacobs. If you don’t have a lot of time to work on your hair on a hot summer morning (and honestly, we feel you!), this fresh, effortlessly dishevelled hairstyle is perfect for you. Try sleeping with your hair in a loosely coiled bun at night to wake up with naturally tousled locks come morning.
