Going from red hair to blonde: What you need to know before taking the plunge

Are you considering colouring your red hair to a blonde hue? Here is what you need to know.

Are you currently rocking a fiery hue but want to make the transition to a lighter, brighter shade? Well, before you reach for the bottle, these are the 5 main things you need to know about making the change from red hair to blonde.

As with many colour transformations, there are a lot of do’s and don’ts – and making the change from red hair to blonde may just be the trickiest of them all. But don’t be put off, because with the right know how, you too can channel your inner Khaleesi.

1.  You will need to bleach your hair

In order to take your red hair to blonde, it will require a bleaching process and this can be even trickier if you are currently a faux redhead. Why is this? Well, due to your pre-existing colour, bleach will need to be applied to your hair to strip the colour away.

Bleaching can be done at home, however we recommend seeking out a hair salon and leaving this type of colour transformation to the professionals. Try booking a consultation ahead of time to discuss with your colourist what shade you wish to achieve and to get a better understanding of the colouring process.

2. Your base hair care regime will need to change

When going from red to blonde hair, at home hair care will need to be adapted. This isn’t something to fret over, as it is as simple as switching out your current wash and care set for a one with a colour-specific formula.

To avoid brassiness we suggest using the TONI&GUY Illuminate Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner, and your chosen hue will stay looking vibrant for longer.

3. It can be a long process

After speaking to a professional, you may come to realise that going from red hair to blonde is a process that will very rarely happen on one salon visit.

As the colouring process will require bleach, your colourist may suggest you attend two (or perhaps more) appointments to safely achieve your desired blonde shade.

4. Be prepared for damage

Simply due to the use of bleach to help lighten your locks, it is wise to prepare yourself for the possibility of damaged tresses.

Bleach can cause not only damage to the hair but breakage, too. With this in mind, we suggest cutting back on the heated styling tools and to add a deep conditioning mask to your hair routine immediately!

Editor’s tip: To ensure that you’re fully prepared for going from red to blonde hair, at home treatments like the TRESemmé Biotin + Repair 7 Intensive Mask are a must! This wonder product is formulated to help visibly repair 7 types of damage in just one use.

5. Maintaining your colour

Now that you have achieved the perfect Pinterest blonde you wanted, you may come to realise that the battle is only half won. Now it’s time to get to grips with maintaining the colour.

Expect to visit your salon for regular root touch-ups every 4-6 weeks. It may seem like a lot, but it’s like they say: nothing worth having ever came easy!
