The art of nailing manga hair

Marvellous manga hair right this way.

Looking to nail manga hair for Comic Con or a Halloween party this weekend, but don’t know where to begin? Well, you’ve come to the right place. We know that manga hairdos are some of the most fanciful looks around, making them rather tricky to get right. But since the All Things Hair team has a soft spot for weird and wonderful hairstyles (as you may already know), we’ve decided put together a handy little guide to help you master the art of Japanese comic-inspired hair. And just in time for the festivities on October 31st, too!

So, if you’re nervous about your first cosplay outing, or just looking for ideas to rule your next fancy dress party, scroll down for some #hairspiration that even Serena, Raye, Lita and Amy would be proud of!

4 Tips for nailing manga hair

1. Do your research

If you’re bit of a manga newbie (AKA you don’t yet know your Sailor Moon from your Fairy Tail), then we suggest doing some homework before you try and nail your chosen hairstyle. Brushing up on your manga knowledge is the best way to help you better replicate the look of your favourite character, and remember: in this situation, the internet and Netflix are your new BFFs.

2. Start out simple

It might seem like a lot of fun to try and create really ornate manga-inspired hair, but it’s best to be realistic with your expectations. So if you’re not hair-confident enough to permanently try the style you’ve picked, opt for something a little simpler (and temporary) that you know will suit you, but still give you your desired manga mane!

3. If in doubt, wig it out!

Just because you’re not brave enough to dye your hair a shimmering shade for your cosplay outfit doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to your natural-coloured strands! We’re here to tell you that there are a huge number of cute, multicoloured wigs out there that are just perfect for nailing your manga hair. And the best part is: your tresses will be tucked away safe and sound. Now that’s what we call a winning hairstyle! Credit: @hinahina_chan

4. And remember to have fun!

Last, but certainly not least, it’s important to remember that playing around with new hairstyles inspired by your favourite manga heroes and heroins should be a fun-filled fest. So, whether you’re a serious cosplayer, or just a dedicated dabbler, go wild and have a blast with your funky new ‘do! Credit: @candiceduthe
