Metallic hair: This autumn’s super pretty hair colour trend

So, before your mind conjures images of metal-plated tresses, we think it’s only fair that we explain what metallic hair is! Metallic hair works pretty hues, particularly pastels, and gives them an iridescent look. And it’s this glossy, high-shine effect that gives your hair colour a ‘metallic’ finish. Neat, right? When working with grey hues, adapting it into a metallic tone will give the result of silvery or pewter coloured hair – which will also help add dimension and depth to sometimes flat, greige and charcoal tones. Got a huge crush on ombre hair? Then it’s your lucky day, because silvers are a great option for pairing with icy blonde roots. Credit: @makeubeautifull
After ombre locks without the metallic finish? Then you’ll want to tap into another of this season’s super hot trends – grey ombre (AKA grombre)! You can check out some seriously cool grombre Instagram inspiration, here.

Not feeling metallic hair as the main aspect of your look? Don’t fret: because this trend also looks great when applied as highlights. That’s why we love this coppery updo by @shelleygregoryhair. Editor’s tip: If you want to help keep your metallic hair’s vibrancy last as long as possible, try and use a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for colour-treated hair. We recommend the TRESemmé Colour Revitalise Colour Vibrance Protection Shampoo and Conditioner (Both 500ml, £3.69*).

Want to create an oil slick-inspired look? Then make a statement with pretty pastel purples, by keeping your pearlescent tones to your roots and mid lengths. Why you ask? Because this is where light naturally hits your mane first – so this will make for an extra high-shine metallic ‘do. Warning: eye protection is required when looking at this ‘do! And finally, if light pastels and barely-there hues aren’t really your thing, then don’t despair, because the metallic hair trend also extends to darker colours! Remember the peacock hair trend, that we spotted recently? Well, the good news is, that you can tap into 2 (yes, really) hair trends at once! Just work your peacock-inspired hues with an iridescent finish and you’ll be the source of envy for all your friends! Credit: @nealmhair
