Maximise your workout with these helpful hair styling tips.
What you’ll need
Love playing sports? Or are you just constantly working out at the gym? If so, then we bet you’ve got a whole wardrobe full of uber stylish activewear that gets you in the mood for HIIT, pilates or even boxing. But did you know that it’s not only what you wear that can improve your exercise experience? Your hairstyle can, too! Which is why we’ve put together some handy gym hair styling tips to help you maximise your workout and up your hair game.
Top 7 gym hair styling tips
Tip 1: Apply some VO5 Refresh Me Quick Dry Shampoo (£2.99*) to your hair before you work out (and not after)! This way, any excess oil or sweat produced while you exercise will be absorbed by the dry shampoo. Bye-bye, sweaty scalp!
Tip 2: To get wavy hair while you work out, wash your hair before you go to the gym. Twist your damp hair, fashioning it into a low bun. Your hair will start to dry while you work out, so when you’ve finished exercising, you can let your hair loose to reveal gorgeous, flowing waves!
Tip 3: When we sweat, our body produces salt – and all of that salt could end up drying your hair out (bet you didn’t think about that, did you?). So be sure to pack a trusty leave-in conditioner into your gym bag, to help remoisturise your strands on the go. Not sure which one to try? We love the TRESemmé Botanique Nourish & Replenish Hydrating Mist (£5.50*), whose distinct coconutty smell just makes us feel like we’re on holiday all the time!
Tip 4: We know how annoying short layers can be, especially when you’re trying to make your PB and they’re flapping around and poking you in the eyes (not a cool look). But don’t worry, here’s what you can do to control them: simply tie your hair into a ponytail and spray the top of your head with some VO5 Classic Ultimate Hold Hairspray (400ml, £3.29*) to prevent any flyaways or strayed hairs coming loose. And don’t be scared to be generous!
Tip 5: If you prefer to secure your ponytail or bun with some bobby pins, be sure to spray them with some Toni&Guy Glamour Firm Hold Hairspray (£7.49*) beforehand, otherwise they may slide out while you’re doing a high intensity workout (like spinning, dance or boxing)!
Tip 6: If you have long, thick hair, it’s best to style it into a tight updo or a low, flat braid while working out. Why? Because if you rock a high ponytail or plait, when you run or jump, it will hit you on the back, which can be rather painful!
Tip 7: A tight hairband – paired with sweat – creates dents and creases in straight hair. If you want to go straight from the gym to work, and want to avoid any pesky hair dents, then invest in a satin hairband, as these are less likely to leave any tell-tale signs! We won’t tell if you don’t!
