6 Of our favourite Indian hairstyles
Want to show off your long, layered hair? Let’s be honest, ornate updos are great for special occasions, but sometimes you just want to let your hair down! Enter: this classic, yet contemporary Indian hairstyle. Create soft curls with a curling iron and set with a flexible hairspray (we recommend the TRESemmé Runway Collection Make Waves Creation Hairspray, £5.99*), so, that you don’t loose any bounce throughout the day. Not only does this hairstyle look ultra glamorous, but it’s a universally flattering option for all face shapes, too! Credit: @morvi_images
The simple braid
Ideal for those with long, thick hair, this Indian hairstyle is a traditional three-strand braid. Try pairing this ultra feminine classic with a neat centre parting (perfect for adding an ornate tikka), or add a little volume up top to create a more dramatic ’60s-inspired look. Don’t under estimate the simplicity of this plait though: it may be simple to do, but it can still pack quite a punch at sophisticated soirees – especially when teamed with pretty accessories, flowers, or decorative hair gems! You’d be hard pressed to find an Indian hairstyle that epitomises sophistication and elegance more than the classic chignon. This traditional updo looks beautiful for weddings and can work a treat on shorter hair, too. The trick to nailing this ‘do is to lightly curl your hair beforehand, giving it texture and grip for that extra bit of dimension. Alternatively, you could use a texturising spray, like the Toni&Guy Casual Rough Texturiser (£7.49*). Let this seemingly ornate hairstyle speak for itself, or add a delicate sprinkle of fresh flowers around the chignon for a simple, yet effective, feminine touch. Credit: @looksbyjassi
Don’t over look this simple hairstyle, as not only does it look great, but it’s also a brilliant way to make long, thick hair more manageable. Adding layers is a practical and pretty way to reduce heaviness, yet still retaining plenty of your hair’s volume and body. Another great thing about layers is that they can easily be adapted to suit and flatter different face shapes, so whether you have long, rounded, square or oval features, we guarantee this timeless look won’t fail. Casual side braid
Love braided Indian hairstyles? So do we! So why not upgrade your signature plait by moving it to the side? This little adjustment in placement sounds simple, but trust us, it’s utterly effective and will instantly add a flirty, feminine feel to your braided ‘do. French, fishtail, or Dutch – the options are practically endless, so just take your pick! Credit: @weddingdocumentary
Contrary to popular belief, not all Indian hair is poker straight. So if you have curly tresses, why not embrace them? Trust us, keeping your hair au naturel is a lot easier than you think – all you need is right hair product! The secret? Keep your tresses moisturised with a leave-in conditioner (we love VO5 Nourish My Shine Miracle Mist, £4.29*, for its ultra lightweight texture and easy-to-use spray form), and fight frizz and define your curls with a good hair serum.
