Best hairspray picks and how to use them

Give these pretty hairstyles some serious staying power...

Let’s face it: hairspray is the holy grail of all styling products. Without it, that gorgeous updo and those picture-perfect curls wouldn’t stand a chance against a night out on the town, let alone the wind or rain (both of which we seem to be experiencing a lot of lately).

So as a tribute, we’ve put together an article on the best hairspray out there for styling 5 trendy hairstyles. Keep reading to find out which spray and styles to try now.

Best hairspray for 5 stylish hairstyles

Half-up, half-down bow

Have you ever seen a prettier hairstyle? This sweet half-up, half-down ‘do is actually pretty easy to create, but be warned: in order for it to stay intact, this delicate bow hairstyle requires a hefty amount of hair spray.

So after you’ve completed your bow, generously spray it with a super strong hold spray, like the VO5 Ultimate Hold Hairspray, and you can rest assured that your bow will be wobble-free!

Boxer braids

It’s no secret that boxer braids are in. Favoured by trend-setting celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Ciara and Jennifer Lopez, this style is bang on trend for 2019. Not only does it look super stylish, but it’s also every lazy girl’s dream hairstyle: if you braid your hair tight enough and use the best hair spray, you can get a good few days wear out of them!

We recommend using the TRESemmé Firm Hold Hairspray which will not only help to keep your braids in place (minus that crispy finish), but it’ll help to keep those pesky flyaways at bay too.

Twisted bun

Perfect for dinner and drinks with your girlfriends, this utterly gorgeous, undone twisted bun is a great ‘do to try.

Take a 2 inch-wide section of hair from either side of your forehead, and clip them aside. Then tie your hair into a loose low bun.

Place a thin headband over your hair, so that it sits just above your bun, then, working on one side at a time, take the 2 inch-wide section of hair that you clipped up earlier, and spritz it with some Toni&Guy Body Amplify Creation Hairspray, at arm’s length. Begin to weave it around the headband, so that it forms a pretty twist. When you reach your bun, tuck in the ends and clip in place with bobby pins.

Remember: your twists don’t have to be perfect, as this updo is all about channelling that effortlessly chic, undone look. Once you’re done, give it a once over with some more Toni&Guy Hairspray and you’re good to go!

Best hairspray: Woman with natural hair in pompadour updo wearing a scarf and jacket.

Bored of the traditional quiff, but want a stylishly dramatic hairstyle for natural hair? Ladies: meet the pompadour.

This pretty, twisted pomp is easy to achieve, even if you have curly locks. The main feature of a pompadour is that it’s very volumised, so you’ll need to use a volume-boosting hair spray.

Editor’s tip: Try the VO5 Volume Creation Hairspray which will help to create and hold volume!

Twisted half-up, half-down ponytail

Love wearing your hair down, but still want to rock a chic style? Make the twisted half-up, half-down ponytail your new BFF!

While this style looks good on both straight and curly tresses, it looks even better when your hair’s shiny! But don’t fret if you have dull hair: the best hair spray to use is a shine-boosting one, like the VO5 Shine and Hold Hairspray which is great for providing a flexible hold (meaning it’ll allow for some movement) while also giving your style a high-gloss finish. Neat, right?
