Get an A* in hair care with our top tips.
If you’re anything like us, you’re probably wondering how autumn’s rolled around so quickly. The change in weather and the return to school or work also means having to tweak our hair care routine, especially if you have natural hair. So, ahead, we’ve pulled together our essential back-to-school hair care tips for naturalistas to help you get through term time and score an A grade – at least on the ‘fro front.
4 Back-to-school hair care tips
1. Wear protective hairstyles during the week
Wearing protective hairstyles during the week can really help cut down on styling time in the mornings. For those of you who are a little confused by the term ‘protective’, let us first explain that these ‘dos are hairstyles that keep the ends of your hair safely tucked away and require little manipulation. We suggest opting for long-term styles like twists, cornrows or basic braids, because you can wear them from Monday to Friday with minimal hassle.
Editor’s tip: Want to keep your mane looking fresh while it’s in a protective hairstyle? Then why not try wrapping a silk scarf around your hair before going to bed? Silk won’t absorb as much moisture from your hair, and thanks to its smooth surface, it won’t cause as much frizz-inducing friction as cotton does. Smart, right?
2. Make your hairstyles work twice as hard
Remember what we said earlier about the benefits of wearing long-term, protective hairstyles? Well, we’re going to explain a little more about why you should rock hairstyles like the two-strand twist, or braids, like cornrows.
These hairstyles require very little manipulation and can be worn for a few days. Then, at the end of the week (or, as we like to call it: ‘fro Friday!), you can release your hairstyle to reveal a beautiful twist-out or braid-out. And the best part? It means your hair is ready for wash day on Saturday or Sunday!

3. Make the LOC/LOCO/LCO method your BFF
Prepping your hair with the LOC, LOCO or LCO method (which stand for liquid, oil and cream) is really important, as black hair is extra prone to dryness. So, as the colder months come knocking, it’s even more crucial, because the chillier weather can zap moisture from your locks in an instant. Our advice? Make sure you use a good leave-in conditioner and hair oil on a regular basis.
Editor’s tip: Try the Tresemmé Botanique Nourish & Replenish Hydrating Mist (£5.50*). It’s a lightweight spray, free from silicone, parabens, and dyes, and enriched with coconut milk and aloe vera. And for on-the-go moisture, why not try the Dove Advanced hair Series Quench Absolute Crème Serum (£6.99*)? It’s specially formulated for curly and afro hair, which mean it’ll work a treat for your natural tresses!
4. Jazz up your back-to-school-hair with accessories
Looking for a way to take your hair game to the next level? An easy way to get an A*-worthy, back-to-school hair is by working this season’s hair accessories. Bandanas are a fun way to update your curls, while bun cuffs are a sure way to take your updo up a notch. Or… draw inspiration from the Chanel autumn/winter 2016 couture show and opt for a simple headband for an elegant finished look.
