Get your hair ready for sunshine season!

With summertime fast approaching, there is a lot to look forward to. But while sun, sand and sea are all great, they can also bring up new hair quandaries, like: how to keep your hair healthy during the warm months? No need to panic, though. We’ve put together 5 practical tips, sure to help you have the best hair this season!

Summer tips: How to keep your hair healthy

Tip 1: Keep your hair conditioned

Sun and heat can be very drying for the hair, meaning that, just like our bodies during the hot season, your locks need more hydration. So, it’s important not to be lazy and skip conditioning sessions!

“If you’re spending a day by the pool after washing your mane in the morning, leave the conditioner in and tie your hair up in a loose bun or a topknot,” says Unilever creative director & head stylist Dan Lynes

Leaving the conditioner in throughout the day will give it plenty of time to do its job. And when you rinse it off, your hair will feel super-nourished, and you’ll be ready for whatever the night has in store for you! – Dan Lynes.

Tip 2: Use a leave-in conditioner

Remember what we said about the importance of conditioning your hair? Well, it’s also essential to increase your hair’s moisture level during the summer by using a leave-in conditioner. The sun, the sea and the sand can be quite abrasive, so having extra protection in the form of a leave-in conditioner will definitely help (this is particularly important if you have curly or afro hair).

“Leave-in conditioners in spray form are much more practical, which will make you more likely to use them. So, a nice spray leave-in conditioner, like the TRESemmé Oleo Radiance Bi-Phase Conditioning Mist (£6.99*), for example, is a great thing to have. And it’ll make your hair smell and feel really nice, too,” says Dan.

Tip 3: Use hair oils

Another great way to add moisture and nourish your locks is to use a hair oil. Applying a hair oil to your mane before putting on your swimming cap can help limit the contact between your hair and chlorine,” says Dan. Which is great news for blondes, as it reduces the risk of your tresses turning green!

Tip 4: Use a hair mask

If you aren’t doing this already, start giving your hair a treat by using a hair mask, like the Dove Advanced Hair Series Pure Care Dry Oil Treatment Balm (£6.99*). This intensive treatment can help you banish frizz caused by summer humidity and hydrate your locks – ideal for keeping them healthy-looking during the sunshine season. Tip 5: Remember to clean your hair after swimming

After swimming in a pool or the sea, remember to cleanse your hair of chlorine. Dan suggests using “a clarifying (deep cleansing) shampoo, as this will help remove impurities. And after the pool, using a hot oil treatment, like the VO5 Nourish My Shine Hot Oils (£4.28*), will remove 75% of the chlorine, and leave your hair feeling soft and nourished!”

So now that you know how to keep your hair healthy during sunshine season, there are no more excuses!
