How Coronavirus Has Changed Our Hair Routines
We're spending more on hair care than ever before.
We can all agree that coronavirus has completely changed any plans we had for this year. Its effects can be seen everywhere – even, it turns out, in the way we’re styling our hair. With hair salons and barbers closed from March-July, people turned to desperate measures, roping their partners or family members into cutting their hair (often with less-than-desirable results) and rushing out to buy at-home hair dye kits.
Now that the salons are open again and lockdown measures are being lifted, we wanted to find out whether the pandemic has had any lasting effects on our hair routines. We surveyed 400 women in the UK between the ages of 18-35 to find out what impact COVID-19 has had on our hair habits. Here’s what we discovered…
Lockdown Hair Transformations
It turns out its not just celebrities who were using quarantine as a chance to try out a new look. 33% of women said that they had tried a new hairstyle during lockdown, which they styled themselves.
It might not always be as drastic as cutting in a new fringe (we’ve been there) but switching up how you style your hair regularly is fun and is a good way to understand what your hair is capable of doing.

Low-Maintenance Looks Come Out on Top
After 5 months without being able to go to a hairdresser, more than ever women are looking for hairstyles requiring as little upkeep as possible. 39% of the women asked said that they now wear low-maintenance styles.
This could be because more of us are working from home and therefore not feeling like we need to be as extravagant with our styles, but also that we’re conscious of not opting for anything too bold or dramatic, in case salons are forced to close again.

We’re Spending More On Hair Products
With the news that the UK is officially in a recession, it’s interesting that 34% of women plan to spend more on their hair products than they did pre-pandemic. This can be attributed to not being able to go in-salon for treatments or cuts and therefore turning to at-home care instead.
If you’re looking to invest in a good at-home routine for your hair, then we suggest you try a nourishing hair mask. These at-home treatments are great for tackling a wealth of hair needs from dryness and damage from over-processing to adding shine and calming frizz. Basically, they’re magic for your hair.
Editor’s tip: One of our favourite hair masks has to be the TRESemmé Botanique Nourish & Replenish Mask. Not only does it provide deep nourishment for all hair types, but it also smells amazing, adding to the salon-at-home experience.
Self-Care Is More Important Than Ever
When asked what their hair care routine would look like now that the lockdown restrictions are lifting, 45% of women questioned told us that their hair care routine would consist of a minimum 4 shampoo, conditioner, a treatment and styling products. This seems to confirm that in spite of the pandemic, many women are continuing to indulge in self-care to make themselves look and feel good.
Editor’s tip: Looking for a new go-to for your wash routine? Then try the Dove Daily Moisture Light Shampoo and Conditioner which will add that extra boost of hydration just when you need it most.
