How to part your hair according to your face type
Find out which parting is the most flattering for your face type!
We’ll let you in on a little secret: identifying your face shape is key to nailing different hairstyles. Whether you’re thinking about bangs, a bob, or any cut and style, the formula to the perfect look always includes the correct face type. Now you may not have thought of this, but even the way you part your hair should be influenced by the shape and angles of your face. Your hair will frame your face according to how you do your parting, so you gotta figure out where to place it so it complements your features well, highlight the right areas of your face, and draw attention to your best features.
To make your life easier, we put together a quick guide on how to part your hair according to the shape of your face. Get ready to take notes!
How to choose the perfect hair parting for your face type
Round face
If you have rounded features and plump cheeks, a center or a deep side parting would do wonders to your face. They would give your face dimension and create symmetry around it. A middle part always elongates the face, while a side part balances out your features—both effects give your round face favorable results.
Editor’s tip: Creating a deep side part, especially if your hair is not trained to fall that way, can be frustrating because it would be hard to make it stay in place. To keep your parting where you want it, mist the top and front parts with TRESemmé Salon Finish Extra Hold Hairspray. This would hold your hair in place and let you keep that deep side part until your hair gets used to the new parting.
Square face
Your goal is to soften the angles of your face and the best way to do that is to create a side part to make your forehead appear narrower. You’d want to start your part just above the arch of your eyebrow. You wouldn’t want to part too deep because this would create more angles, thus accentuating the sharpness of your features.
Oval face
Feel free to experiment with your parting—try it all: center, side, you can even try zigzag—because wherever you choose to place your part, it would always suit your face type. You can pull off literally anything, so go ahead and have fun and find the look you like best!

Heart shaped face
It works two ways: if you have long hair, go for a center parting; if you have short hair, choose a deep side part. A heart-shaped face is widest at the cheeks and narrows as you go down to the chin, which is typically pointy. A side part will balance out your features and draw the attention away from your pointy chin. A center part works similarly but is more suitable for those with long locks than short-haired gals.
Long face
Your face is the opposite of the other face types. You need what they don’t: the illusion of roundness or wideness. The style that would best help you achieve this is a fringe that is parted at the center. If you don’t feel like getting bangs, a simple center parting will also do.
