10 Best Remedies for Shiny Hair at Home

Shiny hair is often a sign of healthy hair. Frizz-free, damage-free, well-moisturized, soft hair is what we’re talking about. But while it may sound like a dream to many, achieving shiny hair at home is actually possible. All it requires is just a few routine changes and incorporating a few products from your pantry.

Ready to know more?  We’re breaking down the best home remedies for shiny hair

1. Rinse with cold water.

Shiny hair at home starts with a shower and this is not the first time you’ve heard this. But, rinsing your hair with cold water after your shower makes a dramatic difference to the appearance of your hair. Rinsing your hair with cold water helps seal and close your cuticles locking in all the moisture and shine after your wash.

2. Clarify with an apple cider vinegar wash.

As gross as it sounds, one of the main reasons for dull hair is all the built-up junk on your scalp. After washing your hair, mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 1 part of water and pour it on your scalp (make sure not to get any in your eye). Let the solution sit for 2 to 10 minutes before rinsing. It helps remove the buildup on the scalp and helps clarify your roots without drying out your hair thus resulting in minimum frizz and extra shine.

Editor’s tip: The smell of ACV is not your thing? Wash your mane with TRESemmé Detox & Nourish Shampoo. With natural ingredients such as ginger and green tea, this shampoo helps you achieve similar results as an ACV wash.

3. DIY your shine spray.

Here’s another home remedy for shiny hair you’ll thank us for. While we think the shimmering spray or the hair shine sprays are helping us add more shine to our hair, it actually causes damage in the long run and makes your hair lose its luster. Most of these conventional shine serums are filled with alcohols, parabens, sulfates, and other ingredients that are bad for your hair. Make the switch to something more natural like argan oil. It’ll give you the shine you want while improving the overall health of your hair.

4. Go for a satin pillowcase.

One of the best things you can do for your hair is protecting it from the tug and pull your cotton pillowcase while you sleep. You can either wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf before sleeping or invest in a silk or satin pillowcase. Not only will your hair be safe from the friction of a cotton pillowcase, but it’ll also help retain the moisture in your hair which gives it shine.

5. Pour some beer on your head.

Yes, you read that right. Beer works wonders on your hair because of ingredients like sucrose and maltose which tightens your hair cuticles resulting in some major shine! So the next time you had a night in and have an extra can of beer open, don’t toss it out just yet. Instead, use the leftover lukewarm beer by pouring it on your head after shampooing the next day. Allow the beer to saturate in your hair for a few minutes before rinsing it.

6. Guard your hair against heat.

While a good blowdry gives you shiny and bouncy hair just like celebrities, unfortunately, it does more harm than shine. Styling tools like hair straighteners, hot air dryers, curling irons, make your hair lose its natural oils and lose its natural luster. Heat doesn’t just apply to styling tools, you also need to protect your hair from the heat of the sun as well. Cover your hair with a scarf or hat should you decide to step out in the sun.

7. Incorporate yogurt and eggs into your diet.

No, we’re not talking about your breakfast routine, we’re asking you to incorporate yogurt and eggs in your hair care routine. Eggs are a primary source of protein and biotin and we know that our hair is basically made of protein compounds. Yogurt, on the other hand, contains lactic acid which is both moisturizing and helps in cleansing your hair of bacteria and fungus.

Incorporate these two magical ingredients into your hair care routine by mixing these two together in a bowl and creating a hair mask. Apply on your hair and scalp up to 1 hour before showering and enjoy cleaner and shinier locks after!

8. Give your hair a coconut oil mask.

Coconut oil is a traditional Filipino remedy for just about anything (including your hair!) It contains lauric acid which helps bind the proteins in your hair better. This do-it-all miracle treatment will not just give you shiny hair but also help your hair grow, prevent split ends, moisturize your hair and prevent breakage. There’s no wonder why coconut oil has been considered to be the holy grail of hair treatments for ages now! Simply use your fingers and gently massage some oil to your scalp all the way until your ends.

Editors Tip: No time for a coconut oil mask? What about a conditioner that contains coconut oil in it already? Check out Cream Silk Rich Organic Powerfusion Rich Moisture Ultra Conditioner. It has shea butter and coconut that are known to moisturize hair. It also has different flora oils and extracts that help soften, smoothen, and nourish hair.

9. Let Your Hair Down Once in a While

Who better than we know that playing around with our hair is so much fun! It’s one of the easiest ways to change up your looks and can make you look years younger with just the right accessories. From ponytails to messy buns and tight braids – there’s just so much we can do. Over time, the pulling and tugging from the elastic bands that help us achieve these gorgeous hairstyles can damage the hair cuticles. While we all have a favorite way of pushing our hair back, make sure you switch it up and give your hair time to breathe so it can stay soft and shiny!

10. Include Omega 3 in Your Diet

Shiny hair at home? Start with your kitchen and diet. Make sure you are eating right and filling yourself with the right vitamins and nutrients essential for your hair. One of which is Omega 3 fatty acids. A lack of Omega 3 in your diet can lead to your hair being dry and brittle. So make sure you incorporate salmon, tuna, flax seeds, chia seeds, or walnuts in your diet to get your ample dose of Omega 3.

Shiny Hair at Home Takes Time

While all these remedies for shiny hair are sure to make a difference in your mane, it won’t happen overnight. It will take time and a lot of experiments to find which products give you the soft and shiny hair you’re looking for. It can take up to several weeks depending on the extent of dryness or damage in your hair. From hair masks to hot oil massages to eating the right diet and following the do’s and don’ts, all of these are sure to bring you a step closer to the shiny locks you’re looking for.
