Say Bye to Dry Hair With These Tips

Check out our recommended dry hair solutions that can help treat your parched strands and make your hair smoother and more nourished.

When you have dry hair, your tresses may look dull and lifeless. It often leaves you with no choice but to put your hair up in a bun or a ponytail to hide the real state of your strands. Dry hair is also prone to brittleness, which can lead to other hair woes like breakage and hair fall.

But don’t worry! First, let’s look at its common causes to determine the proper dry hair treatment and solutions. We’re also here to recommend shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatment products to help give your parched strands much-needed moisture and nourishment.

Common Causes of Dry Hair

1. Overshampooing Your Hair.

“Shampooing too often causes dry hair,” according to a review article published in the Journal of Drug Delivery and Therapeutics. Washing your hair too often strips away your hair’s natural oils, leaving it parched.

2. Skipping Conditioner.

Shampoos cleanse your hair and remove dirt, excess oil, and grime. However, they also remove sebum, which, according to the Indian Journal of Dermatology, is the “ideal hair conditioner.” When you don’t use a hair conditioner after shampooing, this sebum doesn’t get replenished, and so does moisture in your hair.

3. Overuse of Heat-Styling Tools

“In general, heat is never good for hair,” researchers Alexander C. Katoulis, Dimitrios Ioannides, and Dimitris Rigopoulos write in the book Hair Disorders: Diagnosis and Management. Heat is often used for drying and styling because it denatures the proteins in your hair, altering your hair pattern. However, using heat-styling tools frequently can leave your hair dry and damaged.

Heat can also cause bubble hair, which occurs when the hair gets exposed to heat drastically. “The rapid rise in temperature boils the water in the hair shaft,” the researchers add. The water in the hair shaft then turns to steam, which creates a bubble and pops off your hair cuticle as it leaves the hair shaft. Bubble hair weakens the hair shaft and causes irreversible damage.

4. Loss of Hair Lipids

According to a review article published in the International Journal of Dermatology, lipids or fatty acids act as a barrier that protects the hair from chemical and environmental damage. They also prevent hair breakage and influence your hair’s strength and elasticity. When your hair loses lipids due to sun exposure, aging, and chemical treatments like bleaching, dyeing, and perming, it becomes dry, dull, and prone to breakage.

5. Age

“As the decades pass, the shine and volume synonymous with youthful hair may give way to thin, dull, and brittle hair commonly associated with aging,” researchers Molly Goodier and Maria Hordinsky write in the book Current Problems in Dermatology. So, as your hair turns gray, it gets dry and brittle, too.

Our Recommended Dry Hair Treatment Tips

1. Avoid overwashing your hair.

How often to wash your hair depends on several factors like your hair type, lifestyle, ethnic background, and where you live. In a 2021 study published in the journal Skin Appendage Disorders, researchers found that the Asian populations studied preferred washing their hair five to six times per week. The researchers also did not observe “detrimental effects” on the hair even after a daily wash regimen.

If you have oily hair, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your tresses once a day. But “if you have chemically treated hair, your hair may be drier, so you may want to wash it less frequently,” according to the organization’s website.

For your daily hair washing, we recommend TRESemmé Keratin Smooth KERA10 Shampoo. It has KERA10 Protein Complex, which goes up to 10 layers deep into your hair to nourish it. This gives your hair 10 salon benefits in one wash! It makes your hair smooth and soft, adds shine, tames flyaways, provides heat protection, leaves a long-lasting fragrance, detangles, and strengthens your hair. Plus, it has an anti-frizz and anti-humidity formulation.

2. Always condition your hair after shampooing.

“Using a conditioner can significantly improve the look of damaged or weathered hair by increasing shine, decreasing static electricity, improving strength, and offering some protection from harmful UV rays,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

If you don’t know what conditioner to pick for dry hair, try Cream Silk Ultimate Reborn Dry Rescue Tri-Oleo Conditioner. It has Tri-Oleo Complex—a blend of argan, marula, and rosehip oils—that strengthens, smoothens, and moisturizes your hair. This conditioner also has Moisture Lock Complex that’s specially designed for dry, dehydrated hair.

3. Minimize the use of heat-styling tools.

Using curling irons or hair straighteners can help you style your hair in different ways, but these tools can dry out and damage your hair. You don’t have to completely ditch them. Instead, use them less frequently. For your everyday styling, choose hairstyles that you can create without using these tools. Why don’t you try a messy bun, a loose braid, or a simple ponytail? Or, you can leave your hair down and accessorize with hair clips or a headband.

4. Let your hair dry naturally.

A good blow-drying session can leave your hair smooth and soft. But too much of it can cause your hair to get dry. Instead of doing that, take a break from your blow-dryer and let your hair dry naturally on some days. Or, if you must blow-dry, put your dryer on its low or medium heat setting and hold it around 15 cm. away from your hair to minimize damage.

5. Protect your hair from the sun.

You might take it for granted but your hair suffers from the sun’s rays as much as your skin does. So, protect it from the heat by wearing a bandana. This isn’t just for the wind but for the sun as well. Your bandana also serves as a chic hair accessory, elevating your look.

6. Eat right.

Your diet also plays a role in the health of your hair. “Many nutritional deficiencies lead to poor hair health and include changes to hair structure, texture, and viability,” according to an article published in the journal Clinics in Dermatology. So, make sure to consume a diet rich in proteins, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins, especially A, C, and E. These nutrients can help you get healthy and luscious locks. You can get these nutrients from salmon, spinach, eggs, nuts, berries, avocados, and sweet potatoes.

7. Get regular trims.

Trimming your hair every six to eight weeks can help get rid of dry and frayed tips or split ends. It might not impact the follicles deep inside your scalp, but it will help keep the damage from going up your hair shaft.
